On Monday June 20, an 18-wheel tractor-trailer hauling rolled bales of hay caught fire. The location was in the northbound lane of the bypass just before Old Nunez Road. The first arriving deputy reported the trailer was fully involved. Traffic was blocked for approximately three hours.
Swainsboro Fire Department responded back to the scene on Tuesday morning and applied more water to the hay bales. Chief Strobridge advises that the fire department will monitor the situation. This fire will continue to smolder for a few days. Motorists are advised to use caution, as there will be a smoke condition on the bypass in the area of Old Nunez Road.
