Thanksgiving and fryer safety tips issued

Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking. The kitchen is the heart of the home. On Thanksgiving Day when there lots of activity and people at home, fire safety is very important. The following tips will ensure a safe holiday:
   • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the stove.
   • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
   • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
   • The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee can cause serious burns.
   • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
   • Make sure your smoke detectors/alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
   • Have an A, B, C rated fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen.
   • Call 9-1-1 immediately if a fire occurs.
   As for turkey fryers, there are a few things to note. Although a delicious tradition, deep-frying a turkey can be risky. Every year deep–fryer fires are responsible for five deaths, 60 injuries, 900 homes damaged or destroyed and over $15 million in damages, according to the National Fire Protection Association. For the last seven years, Georgia has ranked fifth in cooking-related insurance claims on Thanksgiving Day. The following are some of the dangers of turkey fryers:
   • In deep frying, oil is heated to temperatures of 350 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Cooking oil is combustible. If heated above its cooking temperature, its vapors can ignite.
   • Hot oil may splash or spill during the cooking. Contact between hot oil and skin could result in serious injury.
   • The fryers use about 5 gallons of oil. Considering the size and weight of the turkey, extreme caution must be taken when placing and removing the turkey from the fryer be sure it is not dropped back into the fryer, splattering and/or spilling the hot oil.
   • Fryers should be used outdoors away from the house and any other buildings. Do not use the fryer on your wooden deck as it could catch fire. It is best used on the driveway of your home.
