Graveside services for Thelva Horton Sharpe, 103, will be held Monday, July 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church with Dr. Carter Berkeley officiating. She died Friday, July 25, 2014 at Gentilly Gardens under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice.
Mrs. Sharpe, a Norristown native, was a 1938 graduate of Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) with a degree in education. She taught school at Dexter High School for over 10 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James L. Sharpe. They lived in Long County, Grady County, Laurens County, Chatham County and Screven County before moving to Statesboro in 1959. She was a substitute teacher for many years and was involved in many clubs and organizations including; the Garden Club, Sewing Club, Canasta Club, the Monday Morning Workers at First Methodist, the order of the Eastern Star and was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Statesboro where she taught Sunday School. She was multi-talented and enjoyed sewing, canning, gardening, cross stitch, crochet, needle point, china painting and was an artist. She was preceded in addition to her husband, her parents, Andrew and Madie Horton; a sister, Ella Horton and a brother and sister-in-law ,Weimer and Flora Mae Horton.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Debra Sharpe; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Sharpe and Andrea (Clark) Deal, all of Statesboro; three great grandchildren, Parker Lamb, Kameron Deal and Kaylee Deal; a sister-in-law, Eris Sharpe of N. Augusta, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Center, 640 Jackson St. St. Paul, MN 55101-2595.
