Baseball season is underway and the Swainsboro Tigers split their opening two games of the season, winning against Vidalia 6-4 and losing to Dublin 13-9. Senior top starting pitcher Keith Stevens toed the rubber against Vidalia and limited the Indians to one earned run in 6.1 innings. Sophomore Brock Hooks powered the offense with a homerun and double among his three hits for the Tigers. Stephen Gomez and Brandon Brown collected two hits each for the victorious Tigers.
On Wednesday, Swainsboro traveled to Dublin to take on the Irish. The Tigers built a 9-5 lead but couldn’t hold on as inability to throw strikes contributed to a 13-9 loss. Gannon Wiley was the starter, surrendering four earned runs in 4.1 innings. Gomez had two hits and two rbi for the offense. The Screven County game scheduled for Friday was rained out. The Tigers will take to the road once more in a matchup against Toombs County this Tuesday. Swainsboro will host the Citizens Bank Invitational Tournament this Saturday with games beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing throughout the day (middle school games, as well).
Keith Stevens, Stone Logan, Stephen Gomez, Bobby Andrews, and Dylan Poole headline this group of Tigers as senior leaders. Stevens had a terrific junior season last year, leading the staff in ERA and wins. Beyond Stevens, the pitching staff is short on varsity experience as a group including Brock Hooks, Stone Logan, Bobby Andrews, Keith McCarty, and Gannon Wiley will be counted on to provide depth. At first glance, it certainly appears that Swainsboro’s season will hinge upon whether these young pitchers are able to step up and provide enough quality innings to keep the stress off of the offense.
Ashley Hooks is entering his first season as the head coach of the Tigers.
