The Emanuel Retired Educators Association gives an annual scholarship to an Emanuel County college student who is majoring in education and exhibits a love of learning and exemplary academic performance. An applicant’s service to others is also considered in the final decision.
On May 22, at its last meeting for this school year, the organization gave the 2012-2013 scholarship to Julie Scott, the daughter of Johnny and Donna Scott of Twin City. In making the presentation, Dr. John Derden, chair of the association’s scholarship committee this year, commended the recipient after he read part of her answer to the question “Why am I majoring in education?” on the application. Dr. Derden added that we really need more outstanding students to become teachers today.
Also at the meeting, GREA Director Dr. Bill Sloan installed the 2013-2014 EREA officers. They are Jean Schwabe, Secretary; Martha Flanders, Treasurer; Syvetta Young, President; and Donald Jenkins, President-elect.
