On August 2 – 3, 2013, the alumni and former staff of the GSU Upward Bound Program will celebrate its founding and more than three decades of assisting high school students in Emanuel, Screven, Candler, Bulloch and Evans counties achieve personal and professional success. The GSU project began in September of 1980 and operated continuously until the Fall of 2012. In the words of Dr. Randy Gunter, project director from 1980-2000, “The project certainly achieved many of its goals by providing high school students in this area better opportunities for attending college.”
Upward Bound is a federally funded education program implemented and monitored by the United States Department of Education. It owes its existence to the federal Higher Education Act of 1965. Notable alumni of Upward Bound include business mogul Oprah Winfrey, actresses Angela Bassett and Viola Davis, political analyst Donna Brazile, and CNN analyst and educator Dr. Stephen Perry.
The Upward Bound celebration will begin Friday, August 2 with a golf outing at the Willow Lake Golf Club in Metter, followed by a social hour at the 40 East Grill in Statesboro. On Saturday, August 3, the celebration will culminate with a family barbecue and picnic at the Mill Creek Regional Park in Statesboro.
