The Departments of General Education and Learning Support at Southeastern Technical College took a new approach to their advisory committee in a meeting earlier this month.
“We are now having an in-house advisory committee composed of the general education and learning support faculty and instructors representing the program areas of the college,” said Cheryl West, dean of general education and learning support.
According to West, this in-house committee will provide an avenue for program and general education faculty to discuss areas where they feel the students need more work on skills taught in the general education area and will allow the instructors to work collaboratively in identifying ways to help students reach their potential.
West and others at the meeting honored previous members of the advisory committee, two of whom were in attendance. Linda Brannen was a charter member of the committee and served as its first chairperson when the group began in the early 90s, and Geraldine Bell became a committee member upon her retirement in the mid-90s.
“A quote I used during the meeting was by Ivan Scheier, who said, ‘The broadest, and maybe most meaningful, definition of volunteering: doing more than you have to because you want to, in a cause you consider good,’” said West. “We are very thankful that all of these members wanted to devote their time and expertise to help us through the years.”
