During their regular workshop meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, the Emanuel County Board of Education heard a presentation from Swainsboro High School’s Principal, Dr. Sonji Leach, and Media Specialist, Mac Barron.

Dr. Leach went over enrollment numbers at the high school, which are up by 24 students this year. She also outlined the school’s initiatives, which are Reading, Writing and Rigor. She went on to explain how the school is emphasizing those initiatives, especially in reading.

Barron, the Media Specialist for SHS, took over the presentation and explained the myriad events and ideas that he has implemented to get students to read. From the “Drop Everything and Read” program, in which students and teachers read for thirty minutes once a month, his reading programs have spread to include name plaques with a teacher’s favorite books, incentives for reading, and an initiative program that encourages students to read for the chance to win a Kindle at the end of the year.

“Before I started asking the kids to read more, I thought it would be good to show them that the adults were reading,” Barron says of the book plaques, which include the title and cover art of the books. “The students will look at these and kind of size you up by them.”

He has also implemented the use of a rack for hot new titles or books that are relevant to current events, such as Black History Month. Another part of Barron’s push to get students to read involves a book cart that students can check books out of in the lunchroom during their meals. He outlined the many programs that he has implemented to help students become more proficient and advanced readers, as well, explaining how certain incentives are only available if a student is reading at their level.
