Youth dies from gunshot wound

According to Emanuel County Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens, on Monday, May 30, 2011 at approximately 3:30 p.m., deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to a residence in the southern area of Emanuel County in reference to a person suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Upon their arrival, deputies and EMTs were directed to the body of a deceased male juvenile in the back yard of the property. Investigators from the sheriff’s office and the Emanuel County Coroner’s Office were then notified.
The deceased juvenile was a 16 year old student at Swainsboro High School. The incident occurred shortly after his arrival home from school. Emanuel County Board of Education Superintendent Erma Jenkins stated the following: “Our hearts go out to the young man’s family and friends and I share their grief and sadness. We ask the community to continue to pray for the family and our Swainsboro High School family.”
Sheriff Stephens urges families to speak with other students affected by this loss and to ensure that they receive the proper support. Additional social workers have been called in to the high school to assist with grief counseling.
