The Emanuel County Board of Education met on Monday at Swainsboro Middle School for the monthly workshop meeting. Prior to the meeting, the board held a dedication ceremony for the newly constructed outdoor classroom. The structure was designed and built by Swainsboro High School student David Porter as an Eagle Scout project.
The board unanimously approved agenda items including the Early Head Start budget and surplus sale bids.
Assistant Superintendent Tammy Wilkes announced to the board that a revised AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) list was released on October 15.
“With the revised report we added Adrian School of Performing Arts, Swainsboro High School and Emanuel County Institute, so five of our schools did make AYP,” Wilkes told board members. Swainsboro Elementary and Swainsboro Middle School did not make AYP this year.
Finance Director Whitney Lawrence presented a detailed financial report regarding E-SPLOST. Lawrence also presented budget comparisons and reviewed FY 2011 budget numbers. Lawrence estimates upcoming SPLOST revenues to be approximately $210,000 per month.
Board Chairman Burley Page reminded the board that after the current SPLOST expires there will still be bond payments due.
“If we don’t continue the SPLOST, bond payments will have to come out of local ad valorem taxes,” he said. The bond payments continue into the year 2013.
Superintendent Erma Jenkins had department heads present reports of their respective departments. Jenkins has set specific goals by department for the entire Board of Education.
“I thought it was a good time for each department to come and tell you what they are responsible for so you will know what we do at the Central Office,” Jenkins said.
Reports were given by Wilkes, Lawrence, Director of Student Services, Dr. Karen Ross; Director of Transportation and Maintenance Vernon Hardy; Director of Human Resources, Terri Burke; Director of Curriculum and Learning, Toni Terwilliger; and Director of Assessment and Student Support, Wayne Greenway.
