Dispute on Williams St. ends in tragedy

On the morning of August 29, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Swainsboro Police Officers were dispatched to a business (Janice’s Place) located on Williams Street in Swainsboro. The dispatch information given to officers was that gunshots had been fired and that one subject had been struck. Upon arrival, officers found a black male lying on the floor behind the counter of the business. The downed man was unresponsive and was bleeding from the upper body. Medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported the injured man to Emanuel Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Officers on the scene secured the scene and were able to locate witnesses. In the beginning of this investigation, officers were able to gather valuable information on the events that left one man dead. As other units began to arrive on the scene, officers began putting the information together and were able to name a suspect. As more information was gathered, the information and evidence at the scene led officers to secure an arrest warrant.

Efforts were made by law enforcement to locate the two suspects and all efforts were unsuccessul. Some few hours late,r the wanted suspects turned themselves over to police and were placed in the Emanuel County Jail. Those arrested were Maurice Thomas and Carlton Thomas of a 938 King Circle Drive address.

The victim was identified as Eugene Grier, 42, with an address of 422 Youngblood Street, Swainsboro.
