UDC observes Confederate Memorial Day

The Emanuel Rangers Chapter # 2318 United Daughters of the Confederacy observed Confederate Memorial Day at the historic Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church in Emanuel County on Saturday, April 24th at 2:00 pm. Chapter Members and guests were welcomed by Elder Tommy Rountree. Elder Rountree gave a brief history of the church, followed by an invocation. Mrs. Elaine C. Thomas, Chapter Chaplain led the responsive reading. Rev. Emory Fennell led the assembly in singing the official hymn of the Organization, How Firm a Foundation.

Memorial Tributes were given to: Confederate Veterans by Mrs. Joyce L. Fennell, Recorder of Military Service awards; Veterans of all Wars by Mrs. Barbara T. Stokes, Second Vice President; Deceased Real Daughters by Ms. Mary Ann Smith, Historian; Deceased UDC Members by Mrs. Sarah R. Thompson. Special Memorial Tributes for deceased Chapter Members were given by Mrs. Jane G. Durden, President General UDC to: Mrs. James Holland, Past Georgia Division President; and Mrs. S. Judson Harrison.

A summary of the Military Service of all Confederate Soldiers buried in the cemetery was given by Chapter President Judy W. Womack as follows: George Ira Barwick, Pvt. Co. F, Cobb’s Legion, Georgia Cavalry; James Bishop, Pvt. Co. H, 2nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry; Daniel D. Boatright, Pvt. Co. G, 54th Regiment, Georgia Infantry; Matthew Lewis Brown, Pvt. Co. F, Cobb’s Legion, Georgia Cavalry; Samuel J. Brown, Pvt. Capt. Moring’s Co., Emanuel Troops; Manning Coleman, Pvt. Capt. James Grubbs Company, Minute Men; Josiah Davis, Pvt. Brannen’s Company, 12th Regiment, Wright’s Georgia Cavalry, State Guards; Charles F. Fulford, Pvt. Co. H, 14th Regiment, Georgia Infantry; Henry Marsh, Corp. Co. E, 47th Regiment, Georgia Infantry; Joshua Braddy, Pvt. Co. E, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry; Elder William J. Brown, Pvt. Co. H, 2nd Regiment, Georgia Militia; Elder N.W. Bryant, Pvt. Co. C, 54th Regiment, Georgia Infantry; Elder Zach Cowart, Pvt. Co. E, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry; Thomas R. Faulkner, Pvt. Co. K, 19th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry; Reuben Hattaway, Pvt. Co. B, 22nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry; Allen Rountree, Capt., Capt. Moring’s Co., Emanuel Troops; Robert T. Henderson, Pvt. Co. B, 22nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry.

Chapter Registrar Bobbie Daughtry added white carnations to a vase as Memorial Tributes were given and each soldier’s Military Service was summarized. Rev. Fennell led the assembly in singing Faith of our Fathers.

A Ceremony of Bestowal of a Cross of Military Service was conducted by Mrs. Jane G. Durden, President General of the UDC and Mrs. Judy W. Womack, Chapter President. A Korean War Cross of Military Service was presented to Jack Hall, who was a Torpedo-Man’s Mate Electrical, aboard the USS Gurke in the United States Navy. Jack Hall is the great grandson of John Hayes, who served in Company C, 38th Regiment, Georgia Infantry CSA.

A prayer for our nation was offered by those present in the singing of God Bless America, followed by the Benediction by Mrs. Elaine C. Thomas.

A reception followed with refreshments at the Fannie Brewer – Albert Neal Durden home.
