The King of the Twist, the great Chubby Checker, was in Swainsboro last week visiting personalities from Radio Jones. Checker was born as Ernest Evans in Spring Gulley, S.C., on October 3, 1941. He developed a talent for impressions early in life before performing his own style. His stage name was given to him by Pat Boone’s wife as a comparison to another recording artist, Fats Domino. Checker’s version of “The Twist” shot to the top spot of the Billboard Charts in August 1961. Other hits by Checker include “Limbo Rock,” “Let’s Twist Again” and “Pony Time.”
