Bulloch Academy scored early and often and then cruised to a 51-8 win over David Emanuel Academy in the season opener for both teams last Thursday night in Stillmore. The Gators scored 35 first quarter points reroute to their sixth straight win and the eleventh in the last 12 meetings between the two schools.
The Gators scored on their first three offensive possessions, returned an interception for a touchdown and then scored on an 89 yard run on the ensuing series to blow the game wide open in the initial stanza. Ellis Lane, who finished with 189 yards and three touchdowns, scored on a one yard run and then a seven yard run just moments later to begin the onslaught. John Harden who was a perfect seven out of seven on extra point kicks converted both for a 14-0 Bulloch lead. Lane’s first score capped the opening dive of 56 yards in five plays and the second came following a bad snap on a bad snap in a punting situation that gave Bulloch the ball at the DEA 20.
The Gators extended the lead following a short punt that left them with excellent field position at the DEA 40. Two plays later, Bulloch completed their only pass of the night when quarterback Brandon Walker connected with Jasper Lavoi for a 21 yard gain down to the one. Taylor Burke did scoring honors form there to make it 21-0 with 3:10 left in the first period.
Things then went from bad to worse for DEA when Bailey Smith stepped in front of an Eagle pass and raced 42 yards for a touchdown on the first play following the kickoff. And just when it looked like the Eagles had gained some momentum after a 74 yard kickoff return by Miles Patterson down to the Gator 16 the tide shifted back to the visitors from Statesboro. A holding penalty on first down eventually led to DEA losing the ball on downs at the 11. Then on the very next play, Walker broke away from the pack and rambled 89 yards for a touchdown with 22 second left in the quarter.
Bulloch added a safety and then a touchdown late in the second quarter. Ellis Lane capped a 45 yard three play drive to make it 44-0 at halftime. On the Gators first possession of the second half the lead got even bigger. Lane broke away for a 67 yard gain down to the Eagle 11 on the next play Taylor Burke hit paydirt to make it 51-0 with 7:03 left in the period.
The Eagles prevented the shutout when Chet Ellison threw a five yard touchdown pass to Jacob Wheeler with just under six minutes remaining to cap a nine play 56 yard drive. Ellison passed to Chris Shepperd for the two point conversion.
Freshman quarterback Seth Durden completed nine of 16 passes for 127 yards in his varsity debut for DEA. He also completed each of his last seven passes, four of those going to senior Chase Brannen. Miles Patterson who caught two passes for 54 yards also had 145 return yards on kickoffs to finish with 199 all purpose yards.
The Eagles, 0-1, will be at home again this week when they host Robert Toombs, 1-0 after a 20-6 win over Pinewood, in a non-region game. The JV game will start at 4 p.m. with the varsity set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
