The David Emanuel Academy cross country team began the season on Monday August 24 with a multi-team meet at Bulloch Academy. Four boys and one girl competed at the varsity level while four girls and two boys ran in the JV (middle school) division and five girls ran in the elementary division.

Junior Baba Gana was the varsity boys team’s fastest runner for DEA with a time of 24:14 on the 3.2 mile course which was a minute better than his time from a year ago. Senior Evan Simmons with a time of 24:35 and sophomore Kolo Gana with a time of 24:55 each made an improvement of five minutes over their times from a year ago. Scott Irvin, a freshman running his first varsity race, finished with a very respectable time of 26:35. Caitlin Lamm finished with a time of 31:19 in the varsity girls division.

“I am so excited about our varsity team this year” said DEA head coach Michelle Lamm. “Due to the leadership of Evan Simmons, who is our team captain, they are much more motivated and focused this season. They are using records from past years to gauge where they should be this year and to set new goals.”

Haley Williams finished with a time of 13:01 and earned a fifth place ribbon in the JV girls race. Kirsten Lamm recorded a time of 13:37 and was awarded a ninth place ribbon. Tarah Thompson finished her first cross county race at 16:04 and Lauren Williams had a time of 16:21 in her first JV meet. In the JV boys races Brent Patterson finished with a time of 12:56 on the 1.6 mile course, coming up just short of an overall tenth place finish. Parker Lane, racing in his first ever cross country meet, finished the race with a time of 16:19.

“Our JV team is doing well” said Lamm “I am looking for great things from this group and expect to see many of them receiving ribbons or even medals during this season.”

Cameron Hadden was DEA’s fasted elementary runner with a time of 16:21 and she earned a tenth place ribbon. Other JV girls that ran were Haley Thompson (16:26), Carolina Lamm (16:53), Johnna Goodman (21:33) and Alexis Coleman (22:11).

“I’m also proud of these girls” said Lamm. “They are only in the third and fourth grades and four of the five have never competed in cross country before.”

The DEA cross country team will be in action again on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Augusta Prep.
