Simmons awarded Purple Heart

Army Staff Sergeant Derman B. Simmons Jr. joined the military in May of 1998. He went to Basic Training at Ft. Knox, KY. Upon completion, he was sent to Friedberg, Germany, While in the military, he has earned a host of military awards and decorations, which include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Accommodation Medal with Valor, Accommodation Medals with 3 oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medals with 4 oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Valorous Unit Award, Army Good conduct Medals 2 oak leaf clusters, National Defense Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, NATO Medal (Kosovo), Combat Action Badge, and Drivers/Mechanical Badge.

SSG Derman B. Simmons was stationed in the following duty assignments: Friedberg, Germany (1998-2001), Ft. Stewart, GA (2001-2003), Vilseck, Germany (2003-2005), Schweinfurt, Germany (2005-2008), and Grafenwohr, Germany (2008-Present). He has completed multiple combat tours overseas. He deployed with the following units: Kosovo with the 1ST Battalion 37th Armor of Friedberg, Germany, Baghdad, Iraq with the 4th Battalion 64th Armor of Ft. Stewart, Baquabah, Iraq with the 2nd Battalion 63rd Armor of Vilseck, Germany, South West Baghdad (Risalah), Iraq with the 15t Battalion 18th Infantry, and Diyala Province, Iraq with the 3rd Battalion 66th Armor.

On January 8, 2007, SSG Simmons was struck by a road side bomb after his platoon had engaged the enemy. SSG Simmons suffered severe injuries while deployed. He lost over half of his left tricep, left humerus was broken in three places, and a broken index finger. He, also, had radial nerve damaged leaving him with no movement in his left wrist. However, he underwent multiple surgeries, which gave him limited motion in his left wrist. This incident awarded him the Purple Heart.

Although he had these injuries in Iraq, he continues to serve in Iraq in order to support his city, state, and country as a Wounded combat Veteran.

Army Staff Sergeant Derman B. Simmons Jr., is the son of Mattie Brantley and Derman B. Simmons Sr. SSG Simmons was born March 11, 1976, in Metter. He graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1995 and Swainsboro Technical college in 1996.

where he met and married his lovely wife, Claudia Simmons, from Florstadt, Germany. They have three beautiful kids, Joshua Krogmann, Kiara and Aija Simmons, and he has another son, Derman Simmons Ill, from Vidalia. He has three brothers, Leon Bright, Dexter, and Chris Smith. He has two sisters,Dorothy Pierce and Tina Simmons.
