Derrell and Janice Hendley were the central figures at a 50th golden anniversary reception given by their children and grandchildren Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008. They were married in Savannah at Cresthill Baptist Church December 28, 1958, by Rev. C. K. Rainwater.
Janice is the former Janice Elaine Bacon, daughter of the late Leland Olney Bacon and the late Doris Rogers Bacon. She graduated from Warren A. Candler School of Nursing and retired after 36 years of working as a registered nurse.
Derrell is the son of the late John Harvey Hendley and the late Georgia P. Hendley Cowart. He retired in 1987 after 30 years of teaching, which included 19 years in school administration in the Chatham County and Emanuel County school systems.
Guests entered the back foyer of the church and were greeted at the guest registry by two of the couple’s grandchildren. Upon entrance to the social hall, they were met by the honored couple, and led to a table displaying pictures and memorabilia of the couple’s marriage. Round tables were arranged around the room and decorated with white linen cloths, gold ribbon, rose petals, and votive candles.
Refreshments were served on a long, lace-covered table. The table was attended by the couple’s grandchildren. At the center of the table was a breath-taking arrangement of 50 red roses, interspersed with eucalyptus and German statice, a gift to the couple from their children and grandchildren.
The magnificent wedding cake, displayed on a linen-covered table graced with tulle and rose petals, was baked, decorated, and served by the couple’s daughter-in-law, Mrs. Patti Hendley. The four-layered confection was beautifully decorated with fresh roses, gold ribbon, and a porcelain bride-and-groom topper that originally graced the couple’s wedding cake 50 years ago.
The honored couple’s family includes, Keith and Cheryl Womack of Twin City and their daughter and her fiancé of Statesboro, Anna Womack and Nick Cobb; Wesley and Patti Hendley, Josh and Ann Marie of Twin City; and Larry and Elaine Jenkins, Sara and Claire and their friends Ron Dasher and Ryan Fletcher of Guyton.
Over one hundred guests from Emanuel County and out-of-town dropped by throughout the afternoon to congratulate the couple on this happy occasion.
