Bridesmaid’s luncheon honors Miss Bragg and attendants

The bridesmaids’ luncheon honoring Miss Mary Powell Bragg and her wedding attendants was a happy event Friday, Sept. 26 at the circa 1911 Vienna Secession villa of Pat Watson Zemurray in Ardsley Park on Lattimore Place in Savannah.

As the young ladies arrived at 12:30 p.m., they were welcomed by Mrs. Zemurray. Merry chatter and good cheer filled the air as the intimate group of close friends and family were delighted to be with each other as the weekend festivities began. Mimosas in champagne flutes and white wine were served by Jeb Harper from a silver tray in the atrium overlooking the small indoor pool with a fountain.

A beautiful arrangement of orchids and roses was displayed on the coffee table in the living room and a sterling Victorian vase on an English tiered dumb waiter in the dining room held an arrangement of greenery from the Zemurray garden.

Miss Bragg selected a yellow and white print halter dress with gold dangling earrings and gold sandals for the endearing occasion.

Especially sentimental was the location of the party at the home of Mrs. Zemurray, formerly Pat Watson of Swainsboro. Mrs. Zemurray told the ladies of the bride’s maternal grandmother, Leila Williams Smith, hosting Mrs. Zemurray’s bridesmaids’ luncheon at her home in Swainsboro 39 years ago.

Julie Bragg Cassell of Fayetteville, cousin of the bride, offered a special wedding prayer asking God’s blessing of the union of Miss Bragg and her groom, Jimmy Sullivan.

Guests were invited into the dining room where gold-lined place cards personalized in gold ink marked the seating arrangements. A treat at each place setting were chocolate praline turtles wrapped in white tulle and tied with white sheer ribbon.

Bridesmaids finding their places were Leila Bragg Donaldson of Swainsboro, sister of the bride and matron of honor; Angela Rose Bragg of Roswell, sister-in-law of the bride; Kristen Elizabeth Sullivan of Waldorf, Md., sister-in-law of the groom; Lauren Elizabeth Brown of Athens; Rachel Anne Donaldson of Grayson; and Emily Phillips Ullrich of Watkinsville, all college friends of the bride from the University of Georgia; and Dana Loraine Marshall of Fairfax, Va., lifelong friend of the groom.

Junior bridesmaid Katherine Ashley Sullivan of Waldorf, MD, niece of the groom, and flower girl Anna Lei Donaldson of Swainsboro, niece of the bride, were thrilled to join the ladies for the charming event. Other special guests at the warm celebration were Lei Bragg of Swainsboro, mother of the bride; and Lee Sullivan of Reston, Va., mother of the groom.

On the dining table was a gilt and white 19th century classical French porcelain compote holding yellow Asiatic lilies, peach hypericum, coral tulips, green hydrangea, crocosmia, galax leaves and seeded eucalyptus. French gilt candlesticks held black candles and placemats from Scotland featured Scottish game birds. Pale gold floor-length tablecloths on round tables seated additional guests and held matching arrangements mounted on bronze and marble Dolphin candelabra.

The artful and delicious menu served with beautiful china and sparkling silver included shrimp salad on romaine and spring lettuce; steamed asparagus with Asiago peppercorn dressing; slices of honeydew melon and cantaloupe with mixed berries; hearts of palm, artichoke hearts and cherry tomato salad; yeast rolls; sweet tea; and water served in silver goblets. A luscious dessert of key lime pie topped with whipped cream and strawberries dazzled guests.

Miss Bragg chose this elegant setting to present gifts to her bridesmaids and flower girl and thanked them for sharing in her wedding – one of the happiest, most important events of her life. She presented them each with a brilliant silver jeweled pendant on an elegant silver necklace, vintage cookbooks dating back to 1907, soaps from the Savannah Bee Company, vintage Savannah postcards and gourmet chocolates. Each bridesmaid and mother read special quotes from their books that the bride had selected to be read aloud. An especially thrilling treat was when Katie Sullivan, 8-year-old junior bridesmaid, expertly read an extensive section from her “Saturday Evening Post Junior Cookbook” published in 1974.

Hostesses for the occasion to remember were Mrs. Zemurray, Mrs. Cassell, Carol Donaldson of Metter; Betsy Meacham of New York, N.Y.; Gail Bragg of Tyrone, aunt of the bride; Bridget Atkins of St. Simons Island; Gidget Maybin of Ailey; Julie Cassell of Fayetteville; and Heather Bragg of McDonough, all cousins of the bride.
