Miss Toni Burgess of Twin City examined the field of medicine at the National Leadership Forum on Medicine in Chicago.

Children are spending many hours every day at the pool, on a baseball field, or with their friends. It must be summer. Leisure time, however, will limited this summer for many Emanuel County educators: 216 of them will be attending summer professional development classes.

Army distance runner Clay Schwabe competed in the 1500 meter run at the GMC Envoy USA Outdoor track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Schwabe came in sixth place at the Hayward Field meter final.

Bryan Smith and Jenny Reddish are “Exchange Club Youths of the Year” at the Swainsboro High School. Criteria used in the selection process include the composition of an essay and school and community involvement.

Pineland Telephone Coop announces the addition of Richard Price to its management team as staff assistant. Price has 26 years of experience in the telephone industry.

Randy Olliff and Chris Dudley captured third place honors in State A literary competition in Warner Robins recently. Dudley placed third in boys’ spelling. Others competing in state competition were Heather Splawn, girl’s dramatic interpretation and Billy Jackson, boys’ essay. Petite Garrett accompanied the students.

For the second time in as many years, Swainsboro will be host to horses and riders all over the Southeast as they come to attend the annual Georgia Spring Warm-up horse show.

Former Mayor Hugh Johnson was recently awarded the Jefferson Award by WSAV-TV in Savannah for his contributions to the betterment of his community.

50 Years Ago

Swainsboro will have a Laundry School that will be held at Washco Discount House. Swainsboro is one of the few to be selected for this school.

ANational Guard helicopter landed on the “boneyard.” This was the advance detachment of the famed 30th Armored Division from Tennessee.
