Nije leads Eagles past Bulloch

Senior Dawda Njie scored 19 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead David Emanuel Academy to a 69-59 win over Bulloch Academy last Saturday night in Statesboro. The non-region victory improved the number one ranked Eagles to 19-1 on the season and was their fifth straight win.
Next up for DEA will be a rematch with defending state champion Robert Toombs this Friday night in Stillmore. A capacity crowd is expected to be on hand to watch the two teams that battled to a 63- 62 overtime thriller won by DEA back on January 12 in Lyons.
Logan Salter added 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as DEA swept the season series with Bulloch Academy. Greg Glover also came up big for the Eagles with 13 points and three steals starting for the injured Joseph Sparks. Jared Flowers was the fourth Eagle to reach double figures as he finished with 11 points and also had seven boards. Clifford Byrd with eight and Casey Clark and Brandon Blount with two each also scored for DEA. Mark Rocker led Bulloch with 16 points while Jordan Walker added 13 and Will Powell had 12 as the Gators fell to 8-11.
The win over Bulloch was preceded by a region win at Citizens Christian on Friday night. The final score in this one was 70-59 as four Eagles scored in double figures once again.
Clifford Byrd led the Eagles with 20 points while Dawda Njie tossed in 16 points and Logan Salter and Jared Flowers each finished with ten. Flowers also grabbed ten rebounds while Njie and Salter each pulled seven. Salter handed out six assists while Joseph Sparks led the team with five steals to go along with his six points as DEA improved to 9-1 in the region. Brandon Blount’s two points rounded out the DEA scoring. Spencer Hutto led all scorers with 23 points for the Patriots.
The basketball week started with a convincing 72-29 region win at Thomas Jefferson on Tuesday night. Four Eagles reached double figures in scoring again led by Dawda Njie’s 18. Clifford Byrd tossed in 14 points and had six steals while Logan Salter had 12 points ten rebounds and six assists and Jared Flowers had ten points and a team high 13 rebounds as the Eagles built a 38-5 halftime lead. Joseph Sparks with seven, Casey Clark with six, John Mark Sweat with three and Hudson Johnson with two all scored in the win as well.
In B-team action it was Bulloch Academy taking a 45-25 win behind Johnathon Williamson’s 14 points. Hudson Johnson led DEA with nine followed by Ryan Sparks with five, Justin Smith, Caleb Morris and Joseph Powell all with three and Luis Quinones with two.
After the showdown with Robert Toombs this Friday, the Eagles will travel to Jeffersonville to face Twiggs Academy on Saturday before returning home to play Providence Christian in the regular season home finale on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
