What better way to see unity in a community than to watch the enthusiasm and collaboration surrounding the local festivals each spring. From the “Vidalia Onion Festival”, to Metter’s “Bloomin Festival” to the “Pine Tree Festival” in Swainsboro, the citizens of these communities work hard, have fun, and promote activities that reflect positively on the entire region.
It is that same unity in each community that must continue if we are going to promote safety, security and wellness for local victims of crime. This year, April 23 – 29, 2006, has been designated National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This year’s theme – “Victims’ Rights: Strength in Unity” pays tribute to crime victims and survivors who, for many decades, have joined together in mutual support and advocacy to promote victims’ rights and services. It also recognizes the ongoing efforts of victim service providers, justice professionals, volunteers and others who selflessly dedicate their lives to helping victims of crime.
As long as there is sexual violence, child molestation, homicide and crimes of passion, there are victims who need safety, support and healing. Let’s strengthen our community by restoring each victim with appropriate
resources and victim assistance strategies. If you are or know of a victim of these or similar crimes, contact your local victim assistance provider. In Emanuel County, The Sunshine House Children’s Advocacy Center provides victim services to children and their families. These and other victim services are made possible by the Emanuel County Victims’ Committee, through the Board of Commissioners, the Office of District Attorney and other law enforcement agencies.
