Helping to celebrate the life of Coretta Scott King was a unique experience. Coretta, a Civil Rights leader and advocate, was born April 27, 1927 and died Jan. 30, 2006. The celebration began Saturday, Feb. 4 through Tuesday Feb. 7. I was fortunate to attend the funeral services on Tuesday at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Atlanta where Bishop Eddie Long is pastor. Attending the historical moment with me was Wylene Woods. Being able to witness this event and to see people we would never get an opportunity to see was the favor of God.

My past encounter with the King family was when Bernie, Coretta’s youngest daughter, came and spoke to our youth church group hosted its National Youth Convention in Atlanta. Being in the making of history was different.

Along with showing gratitude for her life of servanthood, Wylene and I were able to see and hear four United States Presidents at once. They were: President George W. Bush, William (Bill) Jefferson Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and James Earl (Jimmy) Carter.

Others attending were Governor Sunny Perdue, Mayor Shirley Jackson, Poet/ writer Maya Angelou, Musicians/song writers: Stevie Wonder, Michael Bolton, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Bryon Cage and many more. There were dignitaries from many foreign countries. This represents the spirit of Coretta. She exemplified the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Because Jesus left it for us, she believed

God’s will to be done in earth as it is in heaven.
