East Georgia College’s wrestling team recently received its new NCAAregulation mat. It is 42 by 42 feet in size, forest green in color with gold lines, and has the EGC logo in white, green, and gold in the center. This new fixture of the EGC gym arrived recently and was received with great enthusiasm by coaches Reid Derr and Walt Mason, as well as President John Black and numerous students.

On Thursday, Nov. 10, East Georgia College will start something new in the two-year school’s life. On that date, the EGC Wrestling Team will host wrestling teams from Mercer University and the University of Georgia in EGC’s first formal intercollegiate athletic competition. History professor and head wrestling coach Reid Derr notes, “This is an opportunity for little East Georgia College to prove that it can compete with the big Dawgs!”

Already joining the team are Sergio Torres at 125 pounds, a Toombs County standout who finished in third place in the AA state tournament in 2005; Artem Ishkov, a state fourth-place finisher from Vidalia at 133 pounds; Dalton Drew at 141, who wrestled in 2004 for Swainsboro; Chris Lanier, a 2005 GISA state champion at 145 from David Emanuel Academy who will wrestle 149; Jake Sasser, who wrestled at Screven County High School and will probably wrestle 157 pounds; Dylan Silvers from Toombs County will also vie for position in the 149 or 157 weight classes; Kenneth Johnson, a Swainsboro Area 4AA fourth-place winner in 2004; and Chip Morgan of Swainsboro, who will wrestle at 165. Rounding out the roster are Marcus Beasley, a 184-pounder from Metter High; Matt Waters, a sophomore from Toombs County at 235; and Chris Holt, a freshman from Swainsboro at 285.

This summer EGC joined the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA), a national organization of club wrestling teams from major universities around the nation. During the coming winter season, EGC wrestlers will compete against wrestlers from such bigname universities as Clemson, University of Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Mercer University, as well as smaller schools such as Darton College in Albany. In addition, EGC wrestlers will compete against scores of college teams in tournaments like the Florida Open on Jan. 21 and the NCWA’s Southeastern Conference tournament on Feb. 17 and 18. The wrestling team’s schedule, which is still being completed, is available on the East Georgia College link under “Teams” on the NCWA website at Formal practices begin the week of Sept. 26.
