large mouth bass while fishing with his great-grandfather,

Clint Kent, in the family pond.

    DEAR EDITOR:

    Recently, I was feeling

    like enjoying a trip over to

    Sonic. Unfortunately, I was

    disgusted very quickly

    when I saw the appearance

    of our old Wal-Mart

    parking lot. I was disgusted

    by all the trash lying

    around. When I was a

    Appreciation

    The Emanuel County Farm Bureau Board of Directors recently presented Mr. Loy D.

    Cowart, Jr. with a certificate of appreciation for his many years of leadership as county

    president. Cowart served as president from 1983 to 2005. Since then, membership has

    grown from 2,019 to 4,372. Robert Fountain, Jr., current county president, presented

    Cowart with the certificate.

  • Smoking ban in effect July 1

    Gov. Sonny Perdue has signed a bill that will ban smoking in most public places

    in the state of Georgia. The ban will be in effect July 1.

    The only places smokers will now be permitted to smoke in public will be bars

    and restaurants that do not admit minors; workplace smoking areas with separate

    air handling systems; and hotel and motel rooms set aside for smokers. Those violating

  • Chapman sentencedin Superior Court

    Joshua Michael Chapman was sentenced Friday, June

    24 in Emanuel County Superior Court by Judge Kathy S.

    Palmer, Middle Judicial Circuit.

    Chapman negotiated a plea of guilty on one count of

    burglary. He was sentenced to three years in the state penal

    system.

    in revival July 4-8 at 7:30 nightly. Evangelist for

    the week will be Rev. Dr. L. Perry McNeal. Guest

    ECI JROTC participates in summer camp

    JROTC cadets from high

    schools all over Georgia

    converged on Fort Gordon,

    Georgia for one week of

    summer camp. Emanuel

    County Institute sent six

    cadets for leadership training

    this year. They were

    Brian Costlow, Kimberly

    Foreman, Jason Kirkland,

    Nakisha Watts, Judith

    Atkins and Tiffany Collins.

    Their training began

    with rappelling off a 40foot tower, rope bridges,

    leadership reaction course,

    first aid, land navigation,

    and water safety survival.
