Toddler drowns

According to Emanuel County Sheriff

J. Tyson Stephens, on Wednesday, March 23 at around 11:25 a.m., Emanuel County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Falcon Trail on a missing child call. Upon arrival, deputies were told that 21-month-old Nicholas Guthrie was reported missing by his mother, Angela Guthrie. Sheriff’s deputies and investigators began an immediate search of the area around the residence. Additional help was called in for the search, including Emanuel County firefighters, State Probation officers and volunteers.

Just before 1 p.m., the youngster was discovered in standing water at Hughes

Prong Creek in the woods not far from the residence where the toddler had apparently followed his dog into the woods. Victim was unresponsive and CPR was administered. He was taken by Emergency Medical Services to Emanuel Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

No foul play is suspected in the death. However, the body was sent to the State Crime Lab for a routine autopsy.
